Google Calendar not syncing on Android: checks in a safe order
Google’s Android Calendar troubleshooting separates connection and visibility checks from the last-resort option to clear app data. Preserve any unsynced information before a destructive step, and identify the exact Google Calendar app and account first. These are Google’s Android instructions, not Cloud Calendars settings. Arte Soft develops Cloud Calendars.
Checks in order
| Step | Risk | If it fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Compare with the web; note unsynced events | Non-deletion check;does not clear app storage | You know what to protect |
| Connection, app update | Non-deletion check;does not clear app storage | Refresh |
| Calendar checked; right account | Non-deletion check;does not clear app storage | Event appears |
| Android account sync;per-calendar Sync where offered for a created calendar | Non-deletion check;does not clear app storage | Refresh |
| Free storage | Review storage carefully;do not erase unsynced Calendar data | Sync resumes |
| Last resort:Clear Calendar app storage/data | Unsynced events lost | Only after copying them |
What most people assume
Reinstalling or clearing the app is the first fix to try.
First, find out if anything is unsynced
Compare the same account in Google Calendar on a computer and note any event present only on the phone. Google’s explicit data-loss warning is under Clear your Calendar app data:that action can erase unsynced event information absent from the web calendar. It is not a statement that merely checking connectivity or visibility deletes events. Preserve unsynced details before considering storage clearing, which Google reserves for when other steps fail.
Safe checks
Connection: confirm data or Wi-Fi is on and airplane mode is off. App: update Google Calendar from the app store. Visibility: in the app’s calendar list, make sure the box beside the calendar is checked. Account: Google notes an event added to a calendar not associated with your Google account might not show up in the app.
Then use Menu, Refresh to force a sync.
Sync switches
In Android’s account settings, check that Calendar account sync is enabled. Inside Google Calendar, the separate Sync switch is documented for calendars the user created, not the primary calendar, which normally appears as Events. Do not assume every primary or received calendar has an identical per-calendar switch. Check the setting only where the actual calendar supports it.
Storage and history
Google says that when your device runs out of storage, the Calendar app stops syncing. Free space before anything else drastic.
Google also says the app only syncs past events up to one year. An event from two years ago that is missing on the phone but present on the web is expected, not a fault.
Worked example: one missing appointment
A fictional user created Car service on Thursday at 08:30 in Home maintenance, a secondary Google calendar they created and shared with a partner. The event is absent from the web calendar, so they preserve its details before considering any destructive operation.
They check connectivity, the account, the selected calendar and account-level Calendar sync. For this created secondary calendar, they also find its Sync setting off. They enable it, refresh and allow time for the event to appear, as Google warns synchronization can take time. A possible successful result is the same appointment appearing on the web and then for the partner;it is verified rather than promised immediately.
Check: the partner confirms the entry. No data was cleared.

What to do
- Compare the phone with Google Calendar on a computer and copy unsynced events.
- Check connection and update the app.
- Tick the calendar and confirm it belongs to your Google account.
- Enable Android account Calendar sync and, for a calendar you created, its per-calendar Sync control if available;the primary calendar does not have that same switch.
- Free storage, then Refresh.
- Expect past events older than a year not to sync.
Questions
- Why are old events missing on my phone?
- Google says the Calendar app only syncs past events up to one year.
- Will clearing app data fix it?
- Google reserves clearing Calendar app data for after other fixes fail and warns it can lose unsynced information absent from the web calendar. First use the non-deletion checks and preserve any unsynced details. Checking a visibility box is not the same operation as clearing app storage.
