Google family calendar: who gets it, who can edit, what happens when someone leaves
Creating a family group on Google quietly creates a shared calendar called Family. Everyone in the group gets broad rights over it, and leaving the group ends access. Arte Soft, the developer of Cloud Calendars, explains what Google documents.
Family calendar events
| Event | Effect (per Google) | Do next |
|---|---|---|
| Family group created | Family calendar created automatically | Agree how it will be used |
| Member joins | Can find it, edit events and manage sharing | Agree who manages sharing |
| Member leaves | Loses access | If providing a new named grant, inspect and choose its permission;do not assume read-only |
| Group deleted | Calendar and events remain until deleted manually | Owner inspects remaining ownership/audience before deciding to retain or delete |
| Under-13 shares or makes it public | Permission holders with Make changes and manage sharing are emailed | Review actual recipients and changes;guardian status alone is not the email rule |
What most people assume
Deleting the family group deletes the family calendar.
Who gets it and what they can do
Google says that when you create a family on Google, a calendar called Family is created automatically, and anyone who joins the family or has access to the calendar can find it in Google Calendar on any signed-in device.
Google lists that members can make changes to events and manage how the family calendar is shared. In other words, every member can invite outsiders or change its sharing, not just the person who set it up.
Ownership
Google says the family manager is the default owner and can transfer ownership. Only the owner can delete the family calendar.
Leaving and deleting
If someone leaves the family group, Google says they lose access to the family calendar. If the family manager deletes the group, Google says the family calendar and related events must be deleted manually; they are not removed with the group.
Google says anyone with Make changes and manage sharing permission receives an email when a user under 13 shares the family calendar, makes it public or changes member permissions. That audience is permission-based;do not assume it is exactly the guardians or that every guardian necessarily receives the notice.
Worked example: an older child moves out
A fictional family of four uses Family for school runs and holidays. The eldest leaves the family group and loses that membership-based access. If the family wants to provide selected continuing access, they inspect the named sharing grant deliberately. Google warns non-family members can edit by default, so a parent should choose and verify the intended view-only permission, not assume that sending another invitation is automatically read-only. An agreement that only parents change sharing is a household rule;it does not technically remove other members’ existing capabilities.
If the family group is later deleted, the calendar and events are not automatically deleted according to Google. The owner then inspects the remaining ownership and recipients before deciding whether to retain or delete it. Group deletion is not proof the remaining calendar has exactly the audience the family wants.
Check: after each change, the departing member confirms what they can still see.

What to do
- Know that every member can edit and manage sharing.
- Agree who changes sharing.
- If sharing again with a former member, inspect the named grant and its permission;non-family sharing defaults can permit editing.
- After deleting a family group, inspect the remaining calendar’s owner and audience before retaining or deleting it.
- Transfer ownership if the family manager steps back.
Questions
- Can every family member share the calendar with others?
- Google lists managing how the family calendar is shared among what members can do.
- Does deleting the family group delete the calendar?
