Add another country’s holidays on Mac without duplicating your own events

Your Mac’s default holiday calendar follows its region, but a trip or international team may need another region’s dates too. Add the relevant Holidays subscription instead of entering each holiday as a personal meeting. Then keep the reference dates separate from your own leave arrangements.

Identify which regional reference is missing

A fictional team works across two countries and wants to see a colleague’s public holiday dates before proposing calls. Record which region is needed and which calendars are already visible. A familiar holiday title appearing twice can come from two subscriptions rather than two personal appointments.

Apple says the standard Holidays calendar is based on the computer’s region. Turning off its General setting hides that regional calendar; it does not mean every additional holiday subscription has been removed. Check the calendar list before adding another copy.

Add the different-region calendar

In Calendar on Mac, choose File > New Holiday Calendar. Use the Region menu to select the desired country or region, then click Add. Choose the calendar name, location, alert and refresh settings, then click OK. Check the new calendar in the list and inspect a known holiday date in that region.

To show or hide the built-in regional Holidays calendar, Apple documents Calendar > Settings > General > Show Holidays calendar. Keep this display choice separate from deleting a personal event that happens to have a similar name.

Treat the holidays as provider-controlled information

Apple identifies Holidays as a subscription calendar. Its provider controls the events, so you cannot add or remove holidays directly in that feed. If you need a personal day off or a company-specific closure, create the appropriate owned record through the approved workflow instead of trying to rewrite the subscription.

A public holiday reference is not proof that a colleague is unavailable, that a business is closed or that your own leave was approved. For the fictional team, ask the relevant person about the actual working arrangement before treating the reference date as a confirmed meeting conflict.

Verify a useful overview

Compare one known holiday, the region in the new calendar’s name or information and your intended personal commitments. If a date appears twice, identify both calendar sources before hiding one. Do not delete a work or family appointment just to make the grid cleaner.

What to do

  1. Check existing holiday subscriptions and the desired region.
  2. Use File > New Holiday Calendar and select that region.
  3. Inspect a known date and the calendar source.
  4. Record personal leave separately when needed; verify actual availability with the relevant person.

Questions

Can I delete one holiday from the subscription?
Apple describes the Holidays feed as provider-controlled and read-only. Use an owned calendar for your own distinct commitments.
Does hiding Show Holidays calendar hide every region I added?
Apple says that preference only hides the Holidays calendar for the computer’s region. Inspect other subscriptions separately.
